Chloe, Tom and Esme – Family Shoot

Popping down to see family, catch up and shoot some portraits of my cousins and their wee nipper Esmé.

As I don’t advertise for family photography you won’t see me doing much of it in the daily course of events. If anyone gets in touch to request such a job though I’m always more than happy to oblige, so I hit the road and drove South to see Chloe and Tom and shoot some portraits with them and their little baby Esmé.

The old saying goes “Never work with children or animals” but honestly, if you’ve got a little patience, it’s really no problem and the results are always adorable, if not necessarily what you’re expecting to get!

Sometimes the shots that you’d classically reject are the ones the parents love the most (Esmé trying to eat her giraffe is a perfect example) which is why I always let clients pick out their own selects either on the laptop at the shoot, or via an online gallery.

A friend of mine recently got stuck into a Vegan Chocolate production venture and whilst dropping off some samples for a product shoot (Blog post coming soon) mentioned that he was looking to get some shots done to help his submissions for modelling work, as well as having a clean headshot for use alongside the company website and materials.

Shot at my home studio just before Christmas here are a few images in a couple of different styles. Because poledancing is typically incredibly female-biased I don’t get enough opportunity to shoot male models, they present a totally different strategy for lighting and direction, and also need less time in makeup and prep

I first met Sarah when shooting with the Midland Strobist group several years ago, a happy band of photographers dedicated to teaching each other what they know and producing results with often improvised or DIY equipment for fun.

Lizzy and I met through the same group as she’s kindly offered on one of the shoots to work as a makeup artist, before coming full circle and ending up in front of the camera for some headshots.

These are my favourite kinds of shoots, where there isn’t really a brief and you can noodle around and have fun without the pressure of a deadline or art director calling shots. I wish I had a behind the scenes shot of the wooden table, too, as I’m fairly certain that how we rigged that up would have broken every health and safety directive in the book!

Loretta Hope – Catchup Portraits

Loretta is someone I’ve known for quite some years now, having been present at one of the first informal photo-group meetups I attended back in 2008.

Having known her for a while and on account of her being very easy to work with, it’s no surprise that Loretta (Or Lola, or Llama) is a frequent face in my portfolio of experiments and learning exercises.

Shooting from home on white and black paper backdrops and using a couple of Elinchrom BXRi heads for the main lights (Along with an SU-4 mode SB-800 flash for accent) we tried for a couple of looks to try and feature the new hairstyle, courtesy of the Paul Mitchell company.

As always with our shoots together, one of the hardest things to do is stop her giggling long enough to get the “Serious” shots, which is why often I’ll just abandon that and fill the portfolio with captures of her in her natural state!
